PUBLISHED ARCHIVES
I have been a poet for over forty years.
I began writing poetry and gave up on formal education at age seventeen; in this way my lifelong journey of self-discovery and learning began. Like most poets, I have lived in relative obscurity but I have nevertheless awoken each day with the imperative to create.
I was born in Calgary and was active in the arts scene there for many years. I am still passionate about my city, my home, and hope it will one day be a place where art and art makers are fully embraced and appreciated. Heartbroken that it wasn't I moved to Vancouver Island and spent ten quiet years there in self-imposed exile. In 2010, an old friend encouraged me to return to the prairies and, although I could see improvements in the cultural life, not enough had changed. Also prairie winters being what they are, in 2011 when the opportunity arose my friend and I moved to Bermuda. My friend, Susan, is now my wife and we live in a small pink cottage on the edge of the ocean with our eccentric rescued cat, Maggie.
I have included on this page links to a selection of my published work. In addition to my published poetry you will find separate pages of my Unpublished Archives, A Commonplace Book featuring current work, Sign Language, and my performances - both video and audio -collected to date.
We will be updating the site regularly so I hope that you will return often, stay a while, read some poems and perhaps contact me to tell me what you thought.
Best Regards,
Murdoch Burnett
